A Parent's Guide to a Safe First Phone for Your Child

Short answers for parents choosing a child's first phone — or replacing one that's become a problem.

What's the right first phone for a kid?

It depends on the kid and the need. If they just need to reach you, a basic flip phone is plenty. If they need maps to get home from practice, a way to text friends, or a banking app for an older teen, you want something a little smarter — but still without the social media and open browser that turn a phone into a problem.

What do Kosher Cell phones remove?

Depending on the model, we remove:

  • Web browsers (no Safari, no Chrome)
  • Social media apps (Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X, etc.)
  • Open AI chatbots like ChatGPT
  • Unfiltered Google Messages features (specifically RCS and Gemini AI)
  • The ability to install new apps without approval

What stays: calls, texts, maps, music, email, banking, approved learning tools, and — optionally — WhatsApp with filters.

My child already has a phone. Can you "dumb it down" without getting a new one?

Often, yes. For compatible Samsung devices and some others, we offer a Koshering service — you send us the phone, we strip out the distractions, and you get the same device back with the filter installed. No need to buy new hardware.

Will my kid know how to get around it?

Our filter isn't a parental-control app that a clever 12-year-old can disable by watching a YouTube tutorial. It lives in the operating system. Even a factory reset doesn't remove it. Only we can remove it, and we verify the account owner before doing so.

Can I approve specific apps?

Yes. At checkout you can request specific apps. Later, you can add more through our App Add-On service. Standards-wise: we approve a wide range of practical apps (banking, email, Waze, Zoom) but decline shopping apps, social media, and open AI chatbots.

What about location tracking?

Our phones support standard Android location features, so apps like Google Maps, Find My Device, and family-tracking tools work normally.

What's the "parental lock"?

A checkout option that prevents changes to the account without your password. If you don't want your child to be able to request app changes on their own, turn this on.

How much does it cost?

Phones range from about $99 (basic flip) to $400+ (koshered smartphone). Monthly plans start at $8.50/month and go up based on data usage. Most kids do fine on a plan in the $15–$20/month range.

Where do I start?

If your child is under 12, consider a basic flip. If they're 12–16, a koshered Samsung with tight app controls usually fits best. If they're older or need business tools, the MegaLife is a good middle ground.
